COPA AMERICA COULD HELP PHOENIX GET INTO MLS FOOTBALL

With the large influx of fans into the Phoenix-area to see the Copa America soccer tournament at University of Phoenix stadium, there are now rising speculations if the buzz could lead to a Major League Soccer team in Phoenix anytime soon.

Phoenix is one of the ten venues around the country that is hosting the tournament in America. Two games have already been played in Glendale and the third-place match is already set to be hosted in the city on Saturday. Of the ten cities hosting, the Phoenix-area is the only one that does not have its own Major League Soccer team. This is the reason why the speculations have been flying around.

The editor of Arizona soccer website AZKicksIt.com says the football league does market studies, and that if the Phoenix-area continues to host international games and fans continue to show up, then better things could be in stock for the city. However, He added that the fans would need to show up for more than just Copa America or international soccer games to increase the likelihood of that happening. He went on to mention that Philadelphia got their team based on fan support, so Phoenix can do it as well. The editor said the fans just needs to continue to support the soccer programs and the teams that take place in the city.

It could be very tough for fans to come out for an outdoor soccer game during the hot summer months, so if the MLS were to move up to the city, a soccer-specific stadium with a closed roof for the summer months would be necessary. The editor said that the University of Phoenix Stadium is great, but just too big. The size would make the empty seats more obvious if people did not turn up.

Finance is another critical factor that the MLS would consider. This would mean an owner to put up $300-400 million to bring a soccer team to Arizona and to build a stadium. It is still a possibility, as the MLS wants expansion to the Atlanta, Minneapolis and Miami markets before the end of the decade, but a tall dream nonetheless.
