TORONTO FC BREAKS MLS RECORD

Major League Soccer (MLS) side Toronto FC have broken a two decade old points’ record hull by a club. The top flight side achieved the feat with a 2-2 draw against Atlanta United. The draw pushed The Reds to 69 points total, moving them a point above the record 68 points set by Los Angeles Galaxy in 1998 for most points in a single season.

Toronto reached the 69 points hull in 34 games, a lull compared to LA Galaxy’s 68 points in 32 games. The Galaxy even lost points as games went to a penalty shootout in the case of a draw. They lost out in the shootout twice and were not awarded any points.

Thus the 98’ Galaxy team still holds the record for most points’ per game. While theirs is 2.125 per game, Toronto’s is 2.029 per game. Toronto’s goal difference is +37 while that of the Galaxy is +41.

Nonetheless, it remains a major feat for Toronto FC. Had they won the game against Atlanta, they would have broken their shared record with Seattle Sounders for most wins in a year. They shared the record with the 2014 Sounders team at 20 games.

The two goals scored helped the club reach the second all-time record in the MLS at 74. They are tied with DC United 1998 team while the 1998 Galaxy team tops that chart with 85 goals.

It has been a great season for the club generally. They are the first Canadian side to win the MLS Supporters’ Shield for the best regular season feats. They are expected to make it through the Eastern Conference playoffs and to the MLS Cup.

Toronto coach Greg Vanney, who is being rumoured for Coach of the Year award, is happy with the performance of the team this year, labelling it “spectacular.”
