David Villa scores twice to help his team beat Vancouver Whitecaps

New York City FC managed to come back from 1-0 to beat Vancouver Whitecaps 3-2 thanks to two goals from David Villa.

It was the Whitecaps who took the lead as early as the 1st minute when Rivero took advantage of a too frequent error from City’s goalkeeper to open the scoring.

However, New York City FC will come back into the game and keep possession well. They will be rewarded in the 35th minute when David Villa will score from long range. He benefited from a superb pass from Khiry Shelton.

Villa will add another goal 6 minutes later when he will connect well with an Andrea Pirlo’s corner to give his team a well-deserved lead.

After the break, the Whitecaps will try to come back into the game and will put City under pressure. As it was too often this season, New York City FC will concede a goal when under pressure. Bolanos will be awarded a penalty. The City goalkeeper will save the first shot from Bolanos but will not be able to do anything on the rebound.

The match was heading towards a draw until Steven Mendoza scored the winning goal for New York City FC in the 73rd minute.

New York City FC coach Patrick Viera said that he was pleased with the performance of his team and that Villa has shown his qualities in the game. He believes that David Villa is a leader on the pitch by the way he works and plays. He is not necessarily a vocal player, but he sends a positive message to the other players by the way he behaves himself on the pitch. He was also pleased by the effort put in by the other players that have helped them secured the win.
